Acupuncture improves the body’s functions and promotes natural self-healing process by stimulating specific sites on the body–commonly referred to as acupuncture points. The most often used method is the insertion of very thin, sterile needles into the skin. Pressure, heat, or electrical stimulation may further enhance the effects. Other stimulation techniques include: lasers, manual massage, heat therapy and cupping. This is one of the safest, most comprehensive and far- reaching systems of healing in the world.
During your first appointment we will go over your complete health history and discuss your goals for overall health, including the condition for which you seek treatment. You will also receive your first acupuncture treatment. The initial appointment lasts about 1 1/2 hours and may include recommendations for dietary changes, herbal medicine and supplements.
Absolutely not. Acupuncture was originally developed thousands of years ago as a way to maintain good health and well-being, not just to heal illnesses. Many patients come for regular treatments to achieve overall wellness and enjoyment in life. Acupuncture is a powerful preventative measure to keep patients healthy throughout the year.
While there are many styles of acupuncture, the primary distinction exists within the diagnostic process and the corresponding treatment plan.. Relying on natural laws, acupuncture recognizes that the health of a person’s entire body, mind and spirit must be taken into account in order to fully diagnose the cause of an illness. Practitioners often use different styles depending on the health, age and desired outcome for the patient. Only then can the most effective help be offered so that people can regain their balance and health on all levels.
A majority of insurance companies now reimburse for acupuncture treatments. Consult your insurance company for the terms of coverage on your specific policy. You will want to ask your insurance company if your policy includes acupuncture benefits.
We are also authorized to accept Health Savings Account (HSA) cards.
Payment is due in our office at the time of service. However, as a courtesy to our patients, we can submit your claim for reimbursement electronically so that you do not have to do it yourself. Please let us know if you would like us to submit your claim so that your insurance carrier can reimburse you directly.
While Acupuncture and Dry Needling use similar types of needles, they involve different methods and should not be confused.
People have used acupuncture for centuries, and it is now well regulated with significant research behind it. Dry needling has been developed recently, and there are no official guidelines nor are there regulations for competency and continuing education.
Acupuncture is an entire system of medicine and it does include a form of dry needling (ashi acupuncture) that is less painful and just as effective. Dry needling is designed solely to relieve tightness and pain in muscles.
A Diplomate of Acupuncture (NCCAOM) must not only graduate from an ACAOM accredited program (approx. 3,000 hours for a Master’s degree) but also demonstrate professional competency by passing the national certification examination which includes both Eastern and Western medicine. The NCCAOM Diplomate training and competency verification is in sharp contrast to the acupuncture training of other healthcare professions such as chiropractors, registered nurses or even medical doctors who typically receive 100 hours of abbreviated training.
The frequency of treatments varies with each individual. It is best for you to come in for at least 4-6 weekly visits in the beginning in order to achieve optimal results. After those treatments, together we will discuss the frequency necessary for your individual course of continued treatment. Many patients continue to get regular acupuncture treatments for general well-being even after their symptoms have resolved.
